Bath Abbey Choir

Here is a joint statement from Revd Canon Guy Bridgewater, Rector of Bath Abbey, and Huw Williams, Bath Abbey’s Director of Music:

“We are thrilled to be starting public services in the Abbey from 2 August. While we’ll have music from the organ and solos by members of the Abbey Choir, unfortunately under current guidance we will not be able to sing as a congregation and our Choir will not be returning just yet.

We realise this is hugely disappointing and even frustrating for many of us, especially for our Choir, but please be assured that we are fully committed to bringing back the Abbey Choir for public worship as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

This has been a time of huge uncertainty for all of us. So many more lives are enriched by the opportunities to participate in and to hear choral singing, and we are committed to supporting our musicians and choir in continuing to do so. So many of us, ourselves included, have been grateful for the choirs’ contribution during the lockdown period. Your pre-recorded athems have brought others much joy and comfort during the darkest and most frustrating days of the pandemic.

Our prayers and immense gratitude go to our choir, their families, friends and supporters for their continued patience, professionalism as well as regard for everyone’s safety, and look forward to the day that we’ll be able to welcome you back with us in the Abbey.

Choral music is an integral part of the Abbey’s worship and in time we look forward to hearing the Abbey Choir’s beautiful and inspiring singing, and worshipping all together in the Abbey.”
