Museums Week: Hands-on archaeology
Tue 29 October, 2019 at 10:00 am until 12:00 pm
As part of the Abbey’s Footprint project
Archaeologists have found hundreds of pieces of decorative marble buried beneath the Abbey floor. The marble was once part of the Abbey’s hundreds of wall monuments and was removed and buried in the late 1860s. We are inviting participants to see what it takes to be an archaeologist working with this material.
Participants will have fun, handle, wash, record and learn about their own piece of marble. They will gain a hands on understanding of a piece of the Abbey’s history and contribute to the Abbey’s Footprint Project and its archaeological record.
Free drop in sessions for families
