Bath Abbey Announces New Recipient of Organ Scholarship

 

Bath Abbey would like to announce the recipient of the 2023-24 Dr Martin Clarke Organ Scholarship, Alex Hemple.

 

Alex Hemple will be joining the music team at Bath Abbey in October where he is also studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath. While at Dulwich College, Alex achieved the Organ Scholarship as well as a Music Scholarship, playing piano, organ and violin, co-leading multiple orchestras and touring internationally with the school to Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the USA.

 

He has also performed chamber and piano concerto repertoire, and participated in the 250th Beethoven Anniversary Piano Festival at Oxford. Since joining the Chapel Choir in 2017, progressing to Deputy Head of Choir, Alex became fond of the organ, learning under Richard Mayo from 2018 and taking regular  masterclasses with James McVinnie and Richard Brasier.

 

After being awarded the Organ Scholarship at Dulwich College in 2021, Alex has accompanied the Chapel Choir, visiting and playing in various locations, including Southwark Cathedral and Holy Trinity. Alex also enjoys playing golf, tennis and scuba diving.

 

Alex Hemple, the recipient of the award has said, “With the Abbey’s rich history, I am very grateful for the opportunity of becoming the Organ Scholar and look forward to working with the choirs and playing the beautiful Klais organ.”

 

Huw Williams, Director of Music at Bath Abbey, said ‘‘we are looking forward to welcoming Alex to Bath. He shows a lot of musical potential and we are grateful to Dr Martin Clarke for supporting this Scholarship’.
