Music & Choirs

At Bath Abbey, we have a long tradition of producing exceptional music, something about which we remain passionate. The Abbey Choirs' performances are world-class, appreciated not just by our own music-loving congregation, but deservedly, further afield, reaching many people through their CD recordings and broadcasts.

With such a magnificent choir, it is hardly surprising that music is very much at the heart of our richly varied services. The Abbey Choir (Boys or Girls and Men) performs music at three services every Sunday. The Choir also takes part in a programme of special services, including Advent Sunday, Christmas Eve, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and All Souls Day. These are well attended and thoroughly appreciated by all.

The Abbey choir has professional alto, tenors and basses to support the girls and the boys, if you would like to audition as a deputy please contact the Director of Music Huw Williams.

Our music programme also extends to singing training, concerts and performance workshops for local schoolchildren. Since its inception, our Schools Singing Programme has seen us working with local schools to develop the enjoyment and quality of choral singing in and around Bath. Our Melody Makers choir has also proven to be hugely popular with local children aged 6 to 11 - a great way to engage with music while having fun.

The Abbey promotes three series of Organ Concerts during the year: a Summer lunchtime series (Jun-Aug) and evening recitals during Autumn (Sep, Oct) and Spring (Apr, May). These are given by a different organist each time, including organists of international standing, as well as talented students from across the country.

Bath Abbey Choir comprises three groups - Boys (8 years and upwards), Girls (11 to 18 years) and Men. Because the Abbey has no Choir school, it means we are able to select our boys and girls from a wide range of local schools which allows us to bring together some of the most gifted young voices from in and around Bath. Together with the Men’s Choir, who come from many different walks of life and includes Choral Scholars from the two Bath universities, they work harmoniously to continue a centuries-old choral tradition, and play a vital part in the music life of the Abbey and the City. Being a Bath Abbey Chorister is a fantastic experience, as not only does it provide an excellent musical education and great discipline, it is also extremely rewarding, thanks to a mixture of camaraderie, a shared passion for music, and pure enjoyment, unmatched by any other.

The Choirs lead the Sunday Worship on a fortnightly pattern with the Mens Choir usually singing at both morning and afternoon services and alternating with the Boys and Girls Choirs. This gives the Boys and Girls the chance to take it in turns to perform, as well as to have either a free morning or afternoon.

The Abbey Choir also takes numerous trips abroad, enjoying good relationships with churches in Bath's twin cities: Braunschweig (Germany), Aix-en-Provence (France) and Alkmaar (The Netherlands). It also occasionally undertakes a residential week during the summer holiday, to sing daily cathedral services including at prestigious venues such as Exeter and Canterbury Cathedrals. Other highlights include sharing the same stage as Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti at the Three Tenors Concert in Bath’s Royal Victoria Park, performing with the BBC Concert Orchestra on Christmas Day and appearing on BBC TV’s Songs of Praise. The Abbey Choir has also sung for members of the Royal Family including HM the Queen, and the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall!

Year after year, the Abbey Choir continues to entertain, inspire and enthral audiences with its wonderful performance.  If you’d like the chance to hear our wonderful Choir, please visit us during our Choral services or attend one of their concerts. There is also an opportunity to listen to their Recordings or to purchase a CD from the Abbey Shop. To find out more, please contact our Music Department on
