Lunchtime Recital – University of Central Oklahoma Concert Chorale

Fri 19 May, 2023 at 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm

The University of Central Oklahoma Concert Chorale is the school’s premier choral ensemble, performing challenging works of choral composers from the Renaissance to the present.  Graduate and undergraduate vocal artists are selected by audition from across the campus.  The UCO Concert Chorale has recently performed Choral Fantasy by Ludwig van Beethoven, The Hope of Loving by Jake Runestad, Requiem for Peace & Reconciliation by Michael Hoppé, Missa in Tempore Belli by F.J. Haydn, Frostiana by Randall Thompson, Magnificat in D by J.S. Bach, Epithalamion and Serenade to Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Requiem in C minor by Luigi Cherubini.  Students create a welcoming, accepting and supportive rehearsal environment while committing to high artistic standards of choral performance.

Dr Karl Nelson, Director

Dr Karl Nelson has served as the Director of Choral Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma since August of 2006, where he oversees the choral program, directing the Concert Chorale and vocal jazz ensemble, The Second Street Singers, as well as teaching choral literature and conducting courses. He also serves as the Graduate Choral Conducting program advisor and the School of Music Undergraduate Coordinator.

A student of Kenneth Fulton, Michael Butterman, Jindong Cai, Chester Alwes and Joe Grant, he earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Under the direction of Dr Nelson, the University of Central Oklahoma Concert Chorale has performed multiple times for the Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OkMEA) Conferences, as well as the College Music Society National Conference in September 2010. The choir has also toured throughout Italy in 2018 as part of the L’Ora de Concerto and Musicateneo festivals in Prato and Bologna, respectively, and Brazil in 2014, highlighted by performances at the International Music Festival of Campina Grande.  Dr Nelson has led choral ensembles of all ages and was an ACDA International Exchange Fellow to Sweden in 2015. In addition to his responsibilities at UCO, he also serves as the Director of Music for the First Christian Church-Edmond Chancel Choir and the Worship and Music Repertoire and Resource Chair for the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association. When not directing music, he loves woodworking, rock climbing, watching his beloved Chicago Cubs, and spending time with his loving wife, Jena, and two children.
