UNESCO intangible cultural heritage: Nanyin and Guqin Music World Tour

Nanyin and the Guqin are both UNESCO intangible cultural heritages. The Guqin is handed down as a solo instrument. It is an indispensable tool for Chinese literati to cultivate their character. Nanyin, a music ensemble form that originated in Quanzhou, consists of a vocalist and instruments such as pipa, sanxian, dongxiao and erxian. With its relatively complete ensemble system, Nanyin is known as the ‘living fossil’ of Chinese traditional music.

The year 2024 opened a new chapter of our music exploration. We want to integrate Nanyin and Guqin music and introduce them to audiences in the UK. This is a trip to make more good friends, and we look forward to meeting and communicating with music lovers in Bath, Cardiff and London. During this concert, you will be able to hear long-lasting Guqin pieces such as Liu-shui (Flowing Water) and the most well-known Nanyin pieces such as Mei-Hua-cao (Ode to the Plum Blossom).

The lead musicians of this concert tour are Yayi Cai and Silai Chen. Yayi has served as the music director of Singapore Xiangling Music Society, the art director of Singapore Town God College of Arts, and the director of Nanyin Research Center of Xiamen University Art Research Institute; Silai is a music producer and performer specialized in the Guqin, who has established an international Guqin music collegium called ‘Daya Hetang’.

The concert tour is organized by composer Dr Jerry Yue Zhuo and sponsored by Cardiff University and Pavilion Ensemble. For information about other events in this tour, please visit: https://www.yuezhuo.co.uk/nanyinandguqin
