Heritage Open Day – ‘Monumental Lives’

10.00 – 1.00 and 1.00 – 4.00

A day of free activities to explore our remarkable memorials and the fascinating life stories behind them.

Highlights:

• A children’s art activity for ages 5+
• Special guided tours of the monuments
• Short talks by archive research volunteers on their favourite monument in the learning room all day. You must reserve a ticket for the hourly slots (maximum capacity 30) on Eventbrite (tickets coming soon)
• Refreshments to buy, organised by the Friends of Bath Abbey.

The Abbey has more monuments than any other church in England – around 1500 wall memorials and floor ledgerstones. This event will be held in the Abbey’s Learning room with a day of activities to explore the remarkable life stories of those  many of our memorials.

Hear about previously unknown men and women from the 18^th and 19^th centuries, now listed on a new website: bathabbeymemorials.org.uk.

The event will be run in the morning (10.00 – 1.00) and repeated in the afternoon (1.00 – 4.00).

It will be held in the Abbey’s Learning room. Entrance is through the office door at 9, Kingston Buildings, next to the Abbey and free tickets must be booked on Eventbrite in advance (max. 2 per booking). Please note that there will not be access from the Abbey’s main entrance.

Session 1:

• 10 – 11.20 Talks by research volunteers on their favourite memorials, followed by refreshments served by the Friends of Bath Abbey (11.20 – 12.00)
• 11.00 – 12.00 Family art activity – Create a ‘Proclamation of Praise’ for yourself or a friend. What are all your wonderful qualities?! Design and decorate your proclamation using our calligraphy pens.
• 12.00 – 1.00 Guided tour of key monuments in the Abbey

Session 2:

• 1.00 – 2.20 Talks by research volunteers on their favourite memorials, followed by refreshments served by the Friends of Bath Abbey (2.20 – 3.00)
• 2.00 – 3.00 Family art activity – Create a ‘Proclamation of Praise’ for yourself or a friend. What are all your wonderful qualities?! Design and decorate your proclamation using our calligraphy pens.
• 3.00 – 4.00 Guided tour of key monuments in the Abbey
