Haydn Nelson Mass
Mozart Vesperae solennes de confessore
The Missa in Angustiis (Mass for troubled times) was written by Haydn in 1798 when the armies of Napoleon were threatening Austria. It became known as the Nelson Mass only after Admiral Nelson defeated the French Navy in the Battle of the Nile shortly after it was completed. The music sets the movements of the Latin Mass.
Vesperae solennes de confessore (Solemn Vespers for a Confessor), K339 was composed by Mozart in 1780 for liturgical use in Salzburg Cathedral. The movements are settings of five psalms and the Magnificat, and include the glorious Laudate Dominum.
Soloists: Soprano, Rebecca Bottone; Alto, Olivia Ray; Tenor, Alexander Sprague; Bass, John Savournin.
Katrine Reimers will conduct Bath Choral Society and Bristol Ensemble.
