Across the Pond

Sat 1 July, 2023 at 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm

We celebrate the special relationship with music anticipating the festivity of American Independence Day. Bernstein’s exciting Chichester Psalms, set to a Hebrew text, form the centrepiece of this concert with British and American themes. Bernstein’s parents were Ukrainian Jews who settled in the USA. Bernstein rose to fame with his famous Broadway show West Side Story. Chichester Psalms were written for Chichester Cathedral and premiered in 1965. Aaron Copland’s evocative In the Beginning is featured alongside Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to St Cecilia which was written on the Atlantic during World War II in 1942. Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel and other spirituals arranged by the rhythmic and jazz style American composer Moses Hogan will be featured alongside a new arrangement of Amazing Grace and music by recently deceased American composer, Ned Rorem.

Girls, Boys & Lay Clerks

Tickets £22, £17 and £10 from Bath Box Office (16s and under half price).
