Workshop and concert

Twice a year, the children will have the chance to experience what many talented professional musicians, choirs and soloists aspire to – they get to perform on a stage at a well-known concert venue, in front of a live audience!

Participating schools will be encouraged to bring their pupils to the Abbey for a day-long singing workshop, during which they will spend the day rehearsing and performing a diverse range of choral music.

Past workshops have included special sessions on signed singing, beat boxing and African drumming. The grand finale of the day will be a concert in the Abbey to which family, friends, school governors and staff are invited.

"The Bath Abbey Schools Singing Programme has been a wonderfully positive force in St Stephen's School since the beginning of our relationship in September 2012. Shean Bowers is an outstanding practitioner with a remarkable gift for almost "conjuring" extraordinary performances from children. Our work together has been a total success and the 35 or so children who have directly benefited have had their lives changed for the better forever, with some really transformational developments in personal confidence amongst one or two of the children. I did not plan to be personally involved as closely as it has transpired that I have been, but as a product of a colleague's illness I have been privileged to really engage with the programme at first hand. What a joy that has been. Whilst not the point of the programme, it has certainly lifted this Headteacher's Christmas!"

“It was the best singing experience I’ve ever had” Bradley, Year 5

“Your singing lessons made me feel really calm” Josh, Year 5

“I really looked forward to Tuesday singing with you, and I was amazed that we could sound so good!” Liam, Year 5

“I used to be quite shy at singing but you made me more confident and I even did a solo, I can’t believe it.” Alicia, Year 5

“(Mr Bowers) doesn't mind if you miss a note, he just wants you to join in.”

“I like the way (Mr Bowers) teaches us the songs - if we can't do it correctly, he shows us a little method to get it right.”

“The quality of singing and its delivery in our school has increased dramatically.  This has been apparent most notably in Year 6 with both Shean and the teacher working tremendously hard to help our children and, ultimately, improve their singing.  Their enjoyment of singing has increased (they ask when they will be singing and when Shean is coming in)....  Finally, Shean has gone over and above the project with the Year 6's as well as offering his own ideas to our own Carols by Candlelight performance which improved the quality of singing.”  Head teacher

“Thank you so much – we all miss our Tuesday Singing – so enjoyable and inspiring – I know how empowering my class found singing together as a choir” Class teacher

“All the children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with inspirational adults and came back (from the Abbey Workshop) to school buzzing with excitement and new skills.  Our parents really valued the opportunity to see their children share the day's work at the performance.  We can't wait for the next one!” Class teacher
