Benedictine Bath

From 2nd-6th July, Bath Abbey, with Downside Abbey and St John’s Hospital, will celebrate our shared Benedictine history with a programme of talks, tours, activities and events.

There has been a Christian Church on the site of Bath Abbey for over 1,300 years. Today, Bath Abbey is a parish church but before 1539 it was a Benedictine monastery. There monks lived, prayed and worked according to the rule of St Benedict. Benedict asked monks ‘to prefer nothing to the work of God’ and the Abbey’s vision today of worship, hospitality, and justice draws on our Benedictine heritage.
