Bath Abbey Wins 2021 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award

Bath Abbey has been recognised as a 2021 Travellers’ Choice award-winner by popular travel website Tripadvisor. This achievement celebrates tourist destinations that consistently deliver fantastic experiences around the globe, having earned great visitor reviews on Tripadvisor over the last 12 months. As challenging as the past year was, Bath Abbey consistently received positive reviews and ratings leading to it being placed in the top 10% of attractions reviewed on Tripadvisor worldwide.

Jessica McKenzie, Visitor Experience Manager, said: “We’re delighted to have been given this award for the second year running. A big thank you to all the visitors who have supported us by visiting and leaving reviews during this time. It shows we’ve been able to do what we’ve set out to achieve when we reopened which is to provide a welcoming an positive experience for visitors, where they can feel safe, enjoy their surroundings and the spiritual feeling of the Abbey.

“We have been especially thrilled to have had such positive reviews for our Tower Tours which reopened after nearly 16 months and also our new Summer Nights initiative which saw us extend our opening hours on Thursdays and allowed more visitors the chance to enjoy this special place.”

Recent comments from visitors on Tripadvisor highlighted the Summer Nights late opening and Tower Tours, showing there is an enthusiasm for special events and tours that further enhance the visitor’s experience of the Abbey:

A visitor from Portsmouth left a review that read: “It is a must if you are visiting Bath. Absolutely loved the experience. If you have time I definitely recommend to attend Summer Nights at the Abbey. With live music and a complimentary drink on arrival it gives a very nice start to the evening. If you are adventurous enough, Tower Tours can be purchased on arrival ( mind you, over 200 tiniest spiral steps) the views from the top are amazing….”

A family from Port Talbot wrote: “We visited Bath Abbey on the second of their late evening openings and it was absolutely amazing. Lovely welcome with a glass of Prosecco, non-alcoholic Prosecco or orange juice to enjoy whilst wandering through the beautiful building or sitting enjoying the lovely live music. We booked into a tower tour which really made it special. 212 steps up (and back down) via a narrow winding staircase but you get to stand above the fan vaulted ceiling, see the bell ringing room and the bells and sit behind the clock before the final ascent to the top of the tower for breathtaking views. Francesca and Emma were friendly and knowledgeable, loved their enthusiasm and patience answering question…”

A couple from Henley-on-Thames chose to point out the Memorials, Empire & Slavery exhibition and said: “Historical past sensitively covered. Beautiful church. We chose to look around by ourselves with the help of their leaflet/map with points of interest noted, which was easy to follow and informative. A real ‘highlight’ was their exhibit on the Church, Bath and the slave trade, which was sensitive, informative, honest, eye opening and apologetic. Well worth a visit.”

“Congratulations to all the winners of the 2021 Travelers’ Choice Awards,” said Kanika Soni, Chief Commercial Officer at Tripadvisor. “I know the past year has been extremely challenging for tourism businesses. What has impressed me is how businesses adapted to these challenges, implementing new cleanliness measures, adding social distancing guidelines, and utilizing technology to prioritize guest safety. The Travelers’ Choice Awards highlight the places that are consistently excellent – delivering quality experiences time and time again even while navigating changing customer expectations and new ways of working. Based on a full year of reviews from customers, this award speaks to the great service and experience you provided guests in the midst of a pandemic.”
