Become a Volunteer
Bath Abbey is supported by a large and dedicated team of volunteers who help ensure the smooth running of the Abbey throughout the year. We are always grateful for any support offered by members of the congregation or supporters of the Abbey.
The Abbey is a wonderful place to spend time; it is a beautiful place with many interesting stories, a rich history and a warm and welcoming community. Volunteering could be a great way to meet new people while allowing you to make the most of your interests and existing skills - it also can be very satisfying and a lot of fun. Just ask one of our many enthusiastic and lively volunteers whose ages range from 18 to over 80!
There are many different ways in which it is possible to play a part in the life of Bath Abbey:
Welcomers, Stewards and Guides
With more than 400,000 visitors a year and a busy calendar of church services, family friendly events and concerts, our volunteers are kept extremely busy while remaining enthusiastic and friendly. Many speak more than one language and are always happy to answer visitors’ questions. Responsibilities include welcoming visitors, stewarding in the Abbey, giving guided tours and helping at family friendly events.
Abbey Shop Volunteer
Our Shop is open six days a week, serving both local residents and the Abbey’s many visitors, and can get extremely busy especially during the holidays. Volunteering as a sales assistant consists of selling a wide range of items from souvenirs to Christian books, but also covers much else, for example giving people directions and explaining about the various functions of the Abbey. People often wish to have a chat when making a purchase so a friendly approach and a listening ear is also good thing.
Archives or Research
We are looking for volunteers to look through the Abbey’s archive and other records to find out more about the Abbey’s history and the people who are commemorated in the Abbey throuigh the hundreds of wall memorials and ledger stones. One exciting project will lookinto the lives of those who contributed to the 17th century restoration of the Abbey using the historic Benefactors’ Book.
We plan to hold a training day for people interested in ledger stones research in late February/early March. To express your interest in this day, please contact the Abbey Archivist, Anna Riggs ARiggs@bathabbey.org
The Flower Guild
Visitors often comment on our beautiful flower arrangements which are put together by our volunteers throughout the year. They also prepare additional arrangements and pedestals at major festivals, special services and events.
If you love music, the Abbey Choir, Bell Ringing and Bath Abbey Music Society are ideal ways in which you can take part in and show your support of the Abbey’s music life, while the Friends of Bath Abbey offers a varied programme of social activities and the chance to stay in touch with the life of the Abbey, no matter where you are in the world.
All of these groups would welcome your support. Please note all volunteers who work with children, young people and vulnerable adults will be required to undergo a CRB check (Criminal Record Bureau).
If you are considering volunteering your time either occasionally or on a permanent basis, or simply wish to find out more, please contact Dawn Farmer, or by 'phone on 01225 303 310
