Educational Visits
Bath Abbey has been witness to many significant events in history, ranging from its time as an Anglo-Saxon monastery to the present day. As a result, it can be a wonderful resource for visiting schools by helping bring history to life. Equally, in its role as a living place of worship, the Abbey provides an opportunity to understand what the Christian religion means today as part of a wonderful cross-curricular experience.
Pre-booking is essential for all educational visits.
Please click here to complete our schools booking form online and return it our Visitors Officer.
We offer school/university groups the following types of visits:
Self-guided visit
This allows you to visit and explore the Abbey on your own, while carrying out your own prepared work. Our volunteer Stewards are generally available from 10am to answer questions.
Notes for teachers/group co-ordinators
We offer a Welcome to Bath Abbey leaflet, quiz (English and French) and Prayer Trail on arrival or we can send these to you ahead of your visit to help you prepare for your group’s visit. We can also arrange to send you pdf versions of our History webpages which gives an accurate and interesting insight into how the Abbey has changed over the years, the architecture and interesting characters in the Abbey’s past.
Guided tour
Price: £3.00 per person, maximum no. of 12 visitors per guide. This is a general tour, offering a brief history of the Abbey and its architecture, conducted by one of our team of experienced and friendly volunteers. It lasts approximately an hour and is suitable for English speakers and pupils in Sixth Form or above. If you have pupils who are younger but are studying History as a specialist subject, we can sometimes make an exception, so please do get in touch to check.
Easter Experience
Pre-booking for 2013 is essential. Please check with our Visitors Officer for dates and times.
Price: £1.50 per pupil. This is a great way for Key Stage 2 (Year 5 & 6) pupils to learn about a key part of the RE curriculum in an innovative and fun way. Once a year, we offer local primary schools the chance to bring their pupils to the Abbey for a two-hour long session during which they will get to learn about, explore and reflect on the incredible events during Holy Week and Easter Day. We can host visits from school groups comprising up to 60 pupils at a time.
Gift bags
We offer special individual gift bags for pre-booked schools. Price: £1.50 per student. Please let us know if you require gift bags on booking.
Risk assessment form
We provide a draft risk assessment document on request.

Please note that pupils must be supervised by an adult at all times during their visit to Bath Abbey. Your group visit may be while an event or service will taking place. We would be grateful if you could encourage your pupils to be as quiet as possible and respectful during these times, as well as during their visit to our Chapels as we try and keep these peaceful areas for quiet prayer.
