7) Service to the City

Where earth and heaven meet as we...
Express God’s love for the city

We are aware that Bath is an increasingly rich and cosmopolitan city but that not all its citizens have an opportunity to sharer its prosperity.

We believe that the Abbey can be an icon for Christianity and that this gives the Abbey community a responsibility to express God’s love for all the city of Bath.

We commit ourselves to:

+ look for ways to make the Abbey more visible in the local community. The Abbey has a lively story to tell which is largely unknown;

+ try to discover what the wider community asks of the Abbey;

+ make the Abbey available for national and regular civic occasions and for special times of celebration or tragedy;

+ improve the facilities of the Abbey as a concert/Arts venue (see section 9);

+ play our part in seeking the welfare of all the citizens of Bath, in particular its most vulnerable people;

+ strengthen our service to the city’s poorest people;

+ promote events that celebrates what is good about Bath: its achievements both in the voluntary sector and civic life;

+ set a good example of welcome to tourists;

+ engage with the tourist office of the city and identify areas where we can work better together;

+ support the city links by regular contact and the promotion of occasional mutual visits;

+ develop links and encourage places of learning especially Bath University, Bath Spa University, and Bath College;

+ initiate and strengthen links with other faiths particularly, at this time of crisis, with Islam by meetings of clergy, visits to each others worship centres and invitations to social events as appropriate;
