DIRECTOR OF MUSIC
Music is the beating heart of Bath Abbey. Our reputation as a centre for excellence for music in the Anglican Choral Tradition has been built up over years of hard work, dedication, and leadership. Our choirs have recorded for record labels and BBC Radio 3, and recently were the central focus for our Christmas Day service broadcast live on BBC One.
This work, so central to the vision of the Abbey’s future, will be bolstered with the creation of new singing and musical facilities brought about by Footprint, our programme of works which will renovate and reinvograte the Abbey for centuries to come.
Therefore, it’s an exciting time to join Bath Abbey as our Director of Music. Because you won’t just be leading a programme – you’ll be helping to shape the future of this prestigious institution.
Principally, the Abbey is looking to appoint a fine musician. We recognise that one person may not have all the necessary attributes for excellence in every area. However, you will be able to demonstrate:
Excellence: You will provide evidence of a high standard of musicianship in one or more fields such as keyboard performance, conducting, working with children.
Imagination: The Music Department of the future will aspire both to achieve excellence and widen the Abbey's links with the local community. This may include a number of possibilities and we would expect you to make suggestions.
Leadership: The Director of Music must be able to lead a team of colleagues in fulfilling the aims of a Music Department that has a passion for the worship and the wider ministry of the Abbey. You will have managerial oversight of all the Music Department staff.
We would also expect the successful candidate to pursue their professional musical interest. Time would be made available for this important dimension of a musician's life. We also offer an annual salary of £35,000 along with other benefits of working in the centre of this World Heritage City.
An exceptional post such as this means an exceptional recruitment process.
