Bath Abbey Archives

The archives record the architectural, administrative, and liturgical history of Bath Abbey from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day. They are available for consultation by the general public. There is currently no charge for this service.

 

 

What we hold:

Fabric records:

  • General works, including works to the organ, lighting and stained glass
  • The major fabric restorations of the 19th and 20th centuries: those carried out by George Manners (1833), Sir George Gilbert Scott (1863-74) & Sir Thomas Jackson (1899-1903); the post-war restoration (1947-1960) and the Bath Abbey 2000 restoration

Burial records:

  • Burial Order Books for burials in the Abbey Church (1813-1845)
  • Index, transcriptions and photographs of wall memorials in the Abbey Church
  • Burial Order Books for burials in the Abbey Cemetery (1844-present). These books contain the section/plot numbers which identify the location of individual graves

Cemetery records

  • Title Deeds
  • Section and plot layout plans

Other records, including:

  • Music and Choir records
  • Churchwardens’ records
  • Title deeds for properties held by the Abbey
  • Newsletters and Annual Reports
  • Service registers, service sheets and weekly music lists
  • Plans, drawings & photographs
  • Some records relating to St James Church, Bath

What we don’t hold:

  • Baptism, marriage and burial registers. The original parish registers are held by Somerset Archive & Record Services and can be consulted there.   • Baptism, marriage and burial registers for the parish of St James These are held by Somerset Archives & Record Services
