Become a Volunteer
Bath Abbey is supported by a large and dedicated team of volunteers who help ensure the smooth running of the Abbey throughout the year. We are always grateful for any support offered by members of the congregation or supporters of the Abbey. There are many different ways in which it is possible to play a part in the life of Bath Abbey:
Worship support
Volunteers are on duty for all Sunday, Weekday and the many special Services which take place throughout the year and perform a number of duties, from stewarding at services to helping with refreshments.
Work with children and young people
This includes helping with educational visits, the children’s groups or the crèche at our 9.15am Sunday service.
Ministry to visitors
We currently welcome over 350,000 visitors a year so our volunteers are kept extremely busy, while remaining enthusiastic and friendly. Many speak more than one language and are always happy to answer visitors’ questions. Responsibilities include welcoming visitors, stewarding in the Abbey, giving guided tours and volunteering in the Shop.
Serving in the Sanctuary
Volunteer often assist in the worship of the Abbey by performing specific duties in the services. They take it in turns to serve at the Sunday services, weekday Holy Communions, and the various special services throughout the year.
The Flower Guild
Visitors often comment on our beautiful flower arrangements which are put together by our volunteers throughout the year. They also prepare additional arrangements and pedestals at major festivals, special services and events.
Music
If you love music, the Abbey Choir, Bell Ringing and Bath Abbey Music Society are ideal ways in which you can take part in and show your support of the Abbey’s music life, while the Friends of Bath Abbey offers a varied programme of social activities and the chance to stay in touch with the life of the Abbey, no matter where you are in the world.
Social Action and Mission Links
Another great way to get involved is through the Abbey's Social Action or Mission Links programmes which offer the perfect opportunity to work with a whole range of Christian missions and other charities working in our world community both near and far.
All of these groups would welcome your support. Please note all volunteers who work with children, young people and vulnerable adults will be required to undergo a CRB check (Criminal Record Bureau).
